The Myth of the Killer Waders

I spend a fair bit of time in waders. Breathable chest waders, neoprene chest waders and nylon thigh waders, in an average season I wear all of them. I have also been known on occasion to fall in. For as long as I remember through the angling fraternity and also on occasions in my role as a Search and Rescue Instructor I have heard warnings that falling in whilst wearing waders will result in drowning. This warning usually comes in one of two forms. Firstly that these waders will fill with water and drag the unfortunate wearer to a watery grave. Or secondly these waders will trap air in the feet causing the wearer to float feet upper most with their head underwater resulting in the watery grave again. Now as I mentioned earlier, I have on more than one occasion, fallen in whilst wearing waders and on none of these occasions did I meet my doom, watery or otherwise.
